President’s Message

Hot news here at the ICF-OC is that we have just accepted Beth Griffith, CPCC, as our new Publications Director and she will be taking the lead for next month’s newsletter, Insights, and for any publications that she is sure will be advantageous for you to receive. That makes three new Board members in the last three months; last month we had Elaine Provencher join us as our new Marketing and PR Director and already she has us thinking outside the box in marketing our wonderful little organization! Lydia Welton is our new Programs Director and has taken the reins with grace and clarity.

ACCREDITED COACH TRAINING SCHOOL PANEL DISCUSSION
Presented by: Accredited Coach Training School representatives

As the coaching profession continues to grow, more and more people are seeing the need for professional, accredited training to develop or further their coaching competence. We have assembled a panel of representatives from five International Coach Federation-accredited schools to discuss their school’s philosophy, program format and timeline, credentialing support, and continuing education offerings.

This event is open to members of the current and prospective coaching community, including:

  • Prospective coaches who want professional coach training
  • Current non-accredited coaches who want to become accredited
  • Current ICF-accredited coaches who want to pursue continuing education
  • Professionals in human resources, training, and other fields who want to learn more about coach training
  • How to create a realistic vision, assess your current situation, and develop a plan to move from today to your vision. (Planning strategy)

You will have an opportunity to hear from each of the Coach Training School representatives, ask questions of them in small group discussions, and see a live demonstration of their coaching style.

The following schools will be represented:

Coach U
Coaches Training Institute
iPEC
Institute of Life Coach Training
Newfield Network

Building a Coaching Business
by Lee Pound, The Write Coach, www.leepound.com
Co-founder, Speak Your Way to Wealth Seminars

As coaches, we spend a lot of time learning the fundamentals of coaching.

However, many coaches do not spend nearly as much time on the business of coaching as they should. The fact is that if you work for yourself, you are running a business and a sales and marketing operation first and a coaching practice second.

To be successful as a coach you must sell yourself and your coaching to your clients. You must present yourself as an expert in your field.

Eat a Spider to be a Success!
by Bob Davies

It’s 7 p.m. and a group of business owners are returning from their evening meal break in an all-day conference in Toronto. I have just presented my Performance Excellence program after having been with this group six months ago. I’m sitting at a table, and a woman comes up to me and says, “I had to eat a spider because of you!”
Fortunately she was smiling. I said, “Tell me more.”

Coaching the Adolescent Child: A Guide for Today’s Parent
by Steven Bush, MSW CEO Family Compass, Inc

“Wow, that’s great,” followed by the universal facial grimace and head nod is the common response I receive when I tell people what I do. “I am a life coach for adolescent children and their families”, is my answer to their question, and then I am told a story about their child, their friend’s child, their coworker’s child, or their neighbor’s child. They look at me with sympathy as if I have been given a life sentence having to work with a population that most parents fear and many people choose not to become parents because of.

GETTING CLIENTS FROM YOUR WEB SITE
(Search Engine Optimization For The Technically Timid Coach)
September 11, 2006 12:00PM-1:30PM

It may be pretty. It may even reflect your inner beauty. But (for 99% of coaches) as a business development tool, your web site simply doesn't work. If you hate tracking down clients one at a time, and would love to learn how to attract a steady stream of your ideal clients, week after week, join us.

In one hour we will cover the basics, (for non technical folks) of how to optimize your site so it comes up on Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL and other search engines and begins to bring you clients.

Topics include:

  1. A quick overview of how search engines work.
  2. The importance of having a focus for your marketing, where your ideal clients can find you.
  3. The critical importance of choosing the right keyword.
  4. An overview of basic optimization and link building (So you can instruct your webmaster on what to do).
  5. Writing a home page that engages viewers and gets prospects to contact you.

By the end of the hour you will know whether this type of marketing is a fit for you. (I happen to believe web marketing is hugely undervalued by most coaches.)

7 Benefits of Attending ICF/OC Meetings

You get to…

  1. Ask lots of questions (what coach wouldn’t like that?)
  2. Talk about your business with peers who are genuinely interested in what you have to share.
  3. Learn tried and true business strategies in the coaching field from experienced coaches, consultants, and speakers.
  4. Enjoy a delicious dinner and watch people swimming at the same time (note: motivating to not have a second carb helping).
  5. Participate in a global organization filled with like-minded people who genuinely want to make a difference on the planet.
  6. Receive a warm welcome (and hug) from chapter president, Patricia Hirsch.

    And last but not least...
  7. You can introduce yourself as a life coach without the other person quizzically looking at you and asking, “What’s that?”
